Electricity network upgrades in Alfreton town centre
We will be undertaking essential upgrades to the electricity network in Alfreton town centre between Sunday 27 July and Sunday 7 September 2025.
The £100,000 project will reinforce the high-voltage network to meet increasing electricity demand and support growth and future development in the area. The works form part of our wider £7.5bn investment programme to ensure a safe, resilient, and reliable electricity supply for the communities we serve.
The project involves the excavation and installation of new underground cables across several key roads in the town centre.
From 27 July, Cressy Road and Hall Street will be closed to through traffic, with access maintained for residents only. These closures will remain in place for the duration of the project, which will involve excavation to lay ducting, followed by cable installation and final jointing works. Work will also be taking place on George Street throughout.
In addition, temporary traffic lights will be in operation on High Street and George Street from 27 July to 3 August, and on Marhsall Street later in the summer pending the completion of other parts of the project.
We recognise that roadworks can be disruptive and has taken steps to minimise the impact on residents, businesses, and road users.
The works have been scheduled to take place during the school summer holidays, with all road closures lifted before the start of the new term.
Weekend working will be used to accelerate progress, and pedestrian access will be maintained throughout.
Diversionary routes will be clearly signposted to help drivers navigate the area safely, and all directly affected properties have received advance notice with further details and contact information.
Charlie Torry, Project Coordinator at our Alfreton depot, said:
“We know that works of this nature are never ideal, but we’ll be doing all we can to keep disruption to a minimum during the project. We’d like to thank residents and motorists in advance for their patience while we complete the work.
“Once complete, it will mark a significant reinforcement of Alfreton’s electricity network, ensuring that the town is future-ready as demand for electricity continues to grow.”
