Final report being prepared for dissemination at LCNI Telford on Thursday 7th December 2017.

Project Summary

Electric Vehicle (EV) manufacturers are unwilling to share the specific harmonic data on the EVs currently in circulation in the UK. Vehicles should be compliant with harmonized EU standards under UNECE R10, but various versions of this standard apply to the existing fleet and there is further uncertainly over which standards apply due to the transitional provisions for conformity.

The Electric Vehicle Emissions Testing project was carried out to capture this harmonic data and disseminate it to all GB Distribution Network Operators (DNOs).

The intention was to monitor at least 15 EV’s through various charging cycles and State of Charge (SOC), at the Millbrook Proving Ground. The local substation was also monitored to capture the background harmonic distortion.

Four dedicated chargepoints at Millbrook were monitored using 4 Power Qube devices along with a Lucy Grid Key device and an outram PM7000 in the local substation.

Analysis was undertaken to understand the harmonic effect of charging the vehicles and also to calculate the number of vehicles that could charge on typical DNO networks without causing an issue. A final report has been produced documenting all of the findings. The report concludes that for an Urban Network the theoretical number of 3.6KW chargers able to connect is approx. 44 and 7.2kw chargers approx. 22. For a Rural Network this falls to nine 3.6kw chargers and four 7kw chargers.
