£3m investment to boost power network

A £3million investment on the electricity network is underway in the Clifton area of Nottingham.

The initiative involves Western Power Distribution (WPD) upgrading equipment at a major substation and laying 4.5km of 33,000 volt cable between the Clifton substation and one in Nottingham, which will help further safeguard supply reliability to around 16,000 Clifton customers.

WPD’s investment is also designed to accommodate increased demands placed on the power network in the future, including the Nottingham Express Transit phase 2.

“It ensures that we can provide a high level of service to these areas in the long term by improving the infrastructure and security of our electricity network,” said Pat Booth, WPD’s Projects Manager for the area.
The project, which started in early March, is expected to be completed by December 2014. Cable laying works are being carried out by Morrison Utility Services.

Added Pat: “While this work is being undertaken, our aim is to keep any disruption to an absolute minimum. We have been liaising with Nottingham City Council and the Highways Agency to agree on a cable route which creates the least disruption for traffic flow in the area.

“Our intention is also to work on major junctions during off peak times and to keep customers who live along the route informed by letter. We have also been speaking with local bus companies about our plans.

“Contractors Morrison Utility Services have already written to customers who live along the route to provide further detailed information.”
