Boost to Barwell's electricity network

Major works to upgrade the electricity network in Barwell will prepare the village for the electricity demands of the future, including an expected rise in electric car charging.

As part of the £160,000 investment project, engineers will replace the existing underground cable through the village with 1.7 kms of new cable. Work will begin on 16 March and take three months to complete.

Roads affected will include Queensway, Chesterfield Road, Meadow Road, Shenton Road, Frisby Road, Newlands Road, Kingsfield Road, Arthur Street, Kirkby Road, Stapleton Lane and Bank Terrace.

Efforts have been made to avoid disruption, where possible – including scheduling some of the work to fall during the Easter holidays – but rolling two-way traffic lights will be in place along the route.

It will also be necessary to close Bank Terrace and Arthur Street for three days to enable engineers to dig safely along the route.

WPD Engineer Kingsley White said: “These works are essential to prepare homes and businesses in Barwell for the electricity demands of the future, when we expect more people to own electric vehicles and to be generating and storing more of their own electricity.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused during the project which will benefit local people for generations to come.”
