Chepstow youngsters scoop prize

Talented pupils from Chepstow have scooped the top prize in this year’s Welsh Young Consumers competition held in Llandrindod Wells.

Youngsters representing schools from 11 Welsh Local Authorities, tested their wits on a wide range of consumer related subjects in the Welsh regional final of the competition supported by Western Power Distribution (WPD).

Chepstow Comprehensive School, representing Monmouthshire County Council received £250 for their school, together with the winner’s trophy and will now represent Wales in the national finals which take place in June in Manchester.

The runners up were St Clare’s Comprehensive School, Bridgend who won £100 for their school and will also go through to the finals.

Alan Branch-O'Neill, Senior Trading Standards Officer for Torfaen explains: “This is an annual competition which helps to raise students' awareness of their rights and responsibilities and gives them essential life skills as they prepare for the world beyond school.

“It can be challenging for them but there’s always a lot of excitement on the day as they compete for the winner’s trophy. Along the way contestants amass a great deal of knowledge which they would not necessarily learn at school, said Alan.
