Children get tips on making the perfect nest

Pupils from Stonebow Primary School in Loughborough took their lessons into the outdoors recently and developed some useful nest building skills with help from Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust (LRWT).

We have funded 9 other visits to primary schools in the area, the donation makes the environmental education workshops possible.

During the “Survival of the Fittest” workshop, pupils discovered the challenges that animals face in order to survive, by taking on the role of a garden bird. Through games and activities, they had to find food and shelter, avoid predators and create a nest in which to raise their young!

Marilyn Muse-Hodgson from LRWT led the workshop and explained: “Helping children explore different habitats can help them think about what each species needs to survive. Today we talked about what birds need to make a warm and waterproof nest and then the children gathered twigs, moss, grass and feathers to create their very own nest for a toy bird. We are very grateful to Western Power Distribution for funding this programme and for giving children the opportunity to explore and learn in their own school grounds”.

Colin Randle, Distribution Manager for WPD based in Kettering joined in the activities, he said: “Taking the children outdoors, gathering the materials needed got everyone actively involved and hopefully inspired a few conservationists for the future.”
