Electric vehicle charging set for boost in Chepstow

New electric vehicle charging points could be coming to Chepstow as a result of our green investment to speed up decarbonisation.

We are responsible for the pylons, substations and underground cables delivering electricity to homes and businesses in South Wales, and are spending £700,000 updating the Newhouse primary substation in the Bulwark area where a second high voltage transformer is being installed.

By adding an extra seven megawatts of electricity capacity, the work will ensure the local network can cope with the rising demand for electricity from homes and businesses over the years ahead.

The investment will help Welsh government ambitions for more electric vehicle charging points, such as near the Parkway railway station and main roads serving the Wye Valley tourist area.

It will also mean more locally generated electricity from renewable sources, such as solar power, can be connected to the network.

The everyday reliability of supplies for 2,200 local homes and businesses will be boosted by the upgrade too.

Mark Mears, our Green Recovery Project Manager, said: “Forecasts for electricity usage in the area shows demand is set to grow steadily over the next 10 years. This green recovery investment project serves a dual purpose. It provides network resilience and will enable us to meet that demand which is likely to be led by more people switching to electric vehicles and heat pumps.”

The work is set to be completed this spring and the investment is part of a UK-wide “green recovery” scheme to speed up the benefits of decarbonisation and help to deliver the government’s climate change ambitions.
