Electricity routes to Bryn Llywelyn ruled out as connection agreement withdrawn

Western Power Distribution (WPD), which is responsible for connecting the power that would be generated by the wind farms planned for the Brechfa Forest area, is no longer considering electricity connection options to Bryn Llywelyn Wind Farm.

On 7 May 2014, the Welsh Minister took the decision to dismiss the appeal by RES and to refuse the associated Commons Act applications.

Subsequently, RES, the developer which proposed the wind farm, has formally withdrawn its connection agreement with Western Power Distribution. This means connections east and north of Alltwalis are no longer required as part of the Brechfa Forest Connection Project.

Western Power Distribution still has agreements in place with RWE Innogy to connect the already consented Brechfa Forest East and Brechfa Forest West wind farms.

Andrew Hubbold at WPD said:

“WPD has an obligation to connect wind farm developers to the national electricity network. RES no longer requires a connection, meaning we no longer need to build a connection to the Bryn Llywelyn Wind Farm.

Although not connecting this wind farm, we are still required to build a new connection from the two consented wind farms (Brechfa Forest East and West wind farms) to the electricity network near Llandyfaelog using 132,000 volt twin wood poles.

We are planning to hold statutory consultation later this year on our preferred route the overhead line could take. Ahead of this we will announce our preferred route alignments.”
