Flood defence investment in Nottingham

Over £600,000 is being spent on an initiative to improve flood defence measures at a major electricity substation in Nottingham.

This new initiative involves Western Power Distribution (WPD) building flood walls around equipment in substations and adding flood defence doors and membranes on buildings housing electrical equipment.

Flood warning alarms are also being introduced to provide indications of rising water levels and WPD has purchased six fire engines capable of pumping away 1,500 gallons of water per minute, which have been adapted as emergency response vehicles.

The measures will help to safeguard supply reliability to around 100,000 customers in the Nottingham area.

"It ensures that we can provide a high level of service to Nottingham in the long term, by improving the infrastructure and security of our electricity network," said John Tasker, WPD’s Projects Manager for the area.
