Fresh approach to teaching brings its rewards

Thanks to support from WPD, students from Beacon Infant School in Bodmin will be extending their learning into the outdoors and doing something positive for the whole school in the coming months.

Children from Key Stage 1, involving 4 classes, will have time set aside each day in the curriculum to take their learning outside, starting with the planting of fruit trees to help create a small orchard in the school.
They will be planting a Cornish apple tree and a Cornish plum tree plus a selection of native trees and hedgerows to encourage wildlife and birds.

Katherine Davies, Outdoors Co-ordinator explains: “We have a small garden in the school, plus some raised beds for vegetables. Planting a small piece of woodland on site will provide even richer outdoor learning opportunities for our children, plus they will see the rewards of fresh fruit within a couple of years.”

Chris Clare, from The Silvanus Trust who facilitates the tree planting scheme for Western Power Distribution added: “You don’t have to have a huge space to plant fruit trees. Showing the children how to care for the trees and creating a sense of excitement about what they can expect to harvest from them is very rewarding.”
