Green fingered students help create an orchard

Students from Bishop Road Primary in Bristol took on some extracurricular duties this week, to help develop an orchard in their school field.

Back row adults left to right – John Hazzledine from WPD with Alan Lewis one of the parents alongside Joe Emissah, Deputy Head and Lisa Rowell, parent and co-organiser of the tree planting.

The school is surrounded by terraced houses and the tarmac playgrounds are enclosed by brick walls, so the PTFA wanted to help students develop a sensory space, allotment and orchard in their nearby playing field.

Lisa Rowell, parent and one of the organisers of the tree planting explained: “Thanks to support from Western Power Distribution, we have made an impressive start on our school orchard. We want to create a green open space where the children can enjoy a varied outdoor experience, exploring nature and growing vegetables too.”

John Hazzledine from WPD who joined in the planting session added: “The trees will look great once fully established and bearing fruit. The children had great fun and keen to see the fruits of their labour.”

National Tree Week (26th November – 4th December) is an annual celebration to mark the start of the winter tree planting season. If you would like to apply for trees for your school to join in this year’s event, please contact tcarr@westernpower.co.uk. Terms and conditions apply.
