More help for hearing impaired customers

We have announced a new initiative to further help our deaf and hearing loss customers to coincide with National Deaf Awareness Week.
We are one of the first electricity distribution companies to sign up to use the free NGT (Next Generation Text) service.
WPD is one of the first electricity distribution companies to sign up to use the free NGT (Next Generation Text) service.
By using the NGT Lite App on a computer, tablet or smartphone, customers will now be able to contact us directly using the text messaging service. This eliminates the need to use a relay adviser.
1.4 million customers have already signed up to WPD’s free Priority Service Register designed to help vulnerable people during a power cut, 95,000 of those customers are deaf or have hearing loss.
WPD’s Contact Centre Manager, Chris Griffiths explains: “Providing world class levels of customer service is vital to the way WPD does business, which is why we are committed to constantly improving the services we offer our customers.
“We are always looking to identify new and innovative ways of communicating with our customers. This app is a great tool to help us connect and respond directly to those customers who may be deaf or have hearing loss, many of whom will already be using the service socially.
“Our Contact Centre advisors receive specialist deaf awareness training from charity Action on Hearing Loss (AOHL) to enhance their communication skills with customers who may have communication difficulties.”
We are proud to hold the AOHL Louder than Words Charter mark, a nationally recognised accreditation recognising organisations that provide excellent levels of service and accessibility for customers and for employees who are deaf or hard of hearing.
We were also recently highlighted by AOHL in a national report called Working for Change. This identified it as a business that provides excellent levels of service and accessibility for deaf or hard of hearing customers and employees.
