New defibrillator to save lives in Somerset

People who suffer heart attacks in the Somerset town of Chard will have a better chance of survival with the arrival of a new community defibrillator.

The portable device has been installed on the Millfield Industrial Estate by the Chard Defib Group thanks to our significant funding.

The defibrillator works by checking a casualty’s heart rhythm once its pads are placed on their chest and, if needed, gives them an electric shock. Using one before an ambulance arrives can significantly increase someone’s chance of survival.

Christopher Garnsworthy, our Somerset Distribution Manager, said: “Defibrillators can save lives and we’re pleased to support Chard getting a new one that’ll be available 24/7, seven days a week.”

Clive Adams, of the Chard Defib Group, said: “We’re delighted as a group and a community that this life-saving equipment has been secured and want to thank National Grid and co-sponsors C&D South West for their support in making this happen.

“With another defibrillator at St Gildas, we now have greater coverage for the town.”
