NGED recognised as largest flexibility provider

We have been recognised as the largest flexibility provider, according to the Energy Networks Association (ENA)’s Open Networks programme.

Among the distribution network operators, we procured the most flexibility at almost 846MW, fulfilling a key role of the Distribution Systems Operator (DSO), while UK Power Networks procured more than 614MW.

The ENA has revealed a record 4.6GW of capacity was tendered on local flexibility markets over the last year. The latest figures also show that a record 2GW was actually contracted across the 2022/23 year, with more than 70% of this made up of energy from low-carbon technologies. Stored energy (33%) made up the majority of the total contracted flexibility for delivery, with fossil fuels making up 19%.

Via our DSO, we are using trials with customers and also its Market Gateway, which has been developed for the purpose of facilitating Flexibility Service Providers into its electricity distribution flexibility programme, to look at how opportunities for flexibility across the network can be maximised, unlocking capacity and allowing customers to benefit financially from engaging.
