Plymouth charity plugs into vital Grid support
Support from our Community Matters Fund is enabling a Plymouth charity to keep offering a warm welcome to people in need.
Devon and Cornwall Refugee Support (DCRS) has been able to improve the building it uses and run services throughout the winter after receiving a grant.
As well as replacing expensive fan heaters with more energy efficient electric heaters, the charity has also been able to pay for electrical work to add extra plug sockets.
Azza Gasim, from DCRS, said: “The funding from the Community Matters Fund really makes a huge difference by allowing us to continue operating our space as a vital warm hub for the activities we run, such as casework and health triage, English and IT classes and a music group.
“This means we can provide a much-needed community space for people to be together, as their finances can be extremely limited. The funding is very important as it further supports our clients with their current immigration status, whilst also supporting their mental health needs through the wellbeing services provided. So a huge thank you to National Grid Electricity Distribution.”
Ellie Patey, NGED’s Community Engagement Manager, said: “DCRS has a long history which is testament to the quality of its work. We’re delighted to help it continue offering welcoming support to people who need it.”
DCRS has been supporting asylum seekers and refugees in Plymouth and across Devon and Cornwall for more than 25 years.
The charity has a team of dedicated caseworkers who work closely with health services, solicitors, other charities and partner organisations which focus on physical and emotional wellbeing, housing and finances. It also offers immigration advice regulated by the Office of the Immigration Services Commissioner.
The next round of NGED’s Community Matters Fund opens on 19 March and will be seeking applications from charities and community groups helping equip people to find work.
