Protecting Hereford's electricity supply
13/07/2017
We are carrying out work to protect the electricity supply to 8,000 of our customers in Hereford in the coming weeks.
The work will take place on the A438 between the bridge over the River Lugg to the west of Lugwardine and Netherwood Lane. It will begin on 31 July and run until 25 August. For safety reasons, the road will be closed during this time.
WPD Team Manager Jane Rawlings said: “This part of the A438 runs over a number of bridges and culverts and has been moving. To protect the cable that runs beneath it we are undertaking works to strengthen and resurface the road.
“We apologise for the road closure as we appreciate it will cause massive inconvenience to residents and businesses as it will increase the length of their journeys.
“The closure enables us to carry out the works in a much shorter time than we would be able to do if we used a traffic control system. As well as protecting the cable, the repair will also have the benefit of removing the existing uneven surface.”
To minimise disruption the work has been scheduled for the school holidays and JSM, the contractors working on behalf of WPD, will be operating between 8am and 8pm, seven days a week to complete the work within the timescales.
A diversion route will be in place with signage in the area around Tupsley Bridge and Lugwardine Bridge.
An escort system for emergency vehicles is being provided. Pedestrians and cyclists will be escorted through the roadworks during daylight hours. At night lit barriers will be in place to guide them. There will also be 24-hour security.
Further information, including a diversion map, is available here.
