We have joined forces with the Centre for Sustainable Energy (CSE) and are offering £60,000 to not-for-profit organisations to help support vulnerable and fuel poor customers this coming winter.
Our Affordable Warmth Local Action fund will award up to £20,000 to the best applicants, enabling them to develop or expand affordable warmth projects that benefit local communities. Examples of such projects include schemes that deliver advice and practical support to reduce energy bills and improve energy efficiency; or ones that identify people who are vulnerable during power cuts and cold snaps and improve their home’s resilience to these conditions.
The fund wants to help local projects that offer affordable warmth support.
As part of the funding, the CSE will also provide a mentoring and support programme for successful and promising applicants to help them deliver their projects effectively.
There are two tiers of funding available: up to £10,000 for smaller schemes, and up to £20,000 for larger outreach projects. The fund is available across our region, which covers the South West of England, South Wales and the Midlands.
Alex Wilkes, WPD’s Stakeholder Engagement Manager, explained: “There are a large number of groups who do vital work to support their local communities with fuel poverty issues. The aim of the scheme is to enable some of these groups to extend their range of services or develop new and innovative approaches to support the most vulnerable. It may seem a long way off, but by offering funding now, groups can get themselves ready to support customers ahead of the colder winter months.
“WPD has developed a range of initiatives to support vulnerable customers, in particular those who are potentially most vulnerable during severe weather or emergency power cuts, who can join our free and confidential Priority Service Register.
“I encourage all non-profit making community groups to take a look at the website and see if they qualify for one of the grants. They could be a few clicks away from a grant that can help the most vulnerable in their community to save money and tackle fuel poverty,” Alex added.
James Watt, who’s managing CSE’s involvement, said: “We’re delighted to be administering and supporting applications to this fund. Community groups can make a huge difference to local lives by helping people who are vulnerable to the cold. Their group members are often known and trusted in a region, so find it easier to reach out to those in need of help. And outreach work like this is brilliant way to bring communities together, making them more resilient to extreme and unexpected conditions.”
