Town centre electricity network revamp starts next month in Ammanford

Homes and businesses in Ammanford will benefit from improved electricity supplies as a result of upgrade work starting in the town centre on Monday 2 October.

We are replacing our ageing network of low and high voltage cables with new ones which will future-proof supplies for the next 50 years.

The £225,000 investment will also enable the connection of low carbon technologies, such as solar panels, electric vehicle chargers, heat pumps and battery storage.

The project, due to last five weeks, will cause some disruption for pedestrians and traffic.

Letters have been sent to business owners and residents affected inviting them to contact us if they need to find out more or have questions.

The cable laying, which will involve excavation of pavements and roads, will affect Wind Street, College Street, High Street and Quay Street, but pedestrians will still have access to businesses.

From 2 October, there will be lane closures and temporary three-way traffic lights. Wind Street will be completely closed to traffic over the weekend of 21-22 October.

Mike Griffiths, National Grid Electricity Distribution’s project leader, said: “This is important work to ensure the town centre electricity network can meet the 21st century needs of customers, but we recognise it will be disruptive and apologise for any inconvenience that will be caused.”

As well as contacting residents and businesses in advance, the company has worked closely with the South Wales Trunk Road Agency, Carmarthenshire County Council Highways Department, the emergency services and Ammanford’s Mayor to ensure the project goes as smoothly as possible.
