Travel warning as electricity cable upgrade starts near Bristol Airport
Drivers are being warned of potential disruption to journeys to and from Bristol Airport due to essential electricity network improvements.
We are installing new extra high and high voltage cables along a kilometre stretch of the A38 at the junction of Downside Road.
The work will take up to eight weeks and is due to finish by 22 December at the latest.
The £300,000 investment will replace 1950s cables that have gradually deteriorated, causing faults over the last five years which have led to disruptive repairs.
Four-way traffic lights are in place in both directions of the A38 near the airport, as well as on Downside Road and West Lane.
The traffic lights will be controlled manually from 7am to 7pm to reduce hold-ups for drivers. There is also signage on side roads explaining access for local use.
Area team manager, Lewis Smith, said: “This work is vital to upgrade the area’s electricity network to ensure supplies are not only reliable but can meet growing demand for years to come.
“We’ve been working closely with North Somerset Council to manage the traffic and are looking to complete this work as safely and promptly as possible.
“However we understand that roadworks can be frustrating and apologise for any delays and inconvenience caused as a result.”
