We Launch New DSR Trial

We have launched a new demand side response (DSR) trial that will help business customers generate income from their energy flexibility.
Flexible Power is aimed at half-hourly metered customers that can reduce their electrical consumption or increase their on-site generation in response to an automated signal.
The three-year trial offers customers the option of a fully-managed service that feeds into National Grid schemes or a local constraint managed service.
WPD Innovation and Low Carbon Networks Engineer Matt Watson, who is leading the project, said: “Flexible Power has the potential to help businesses unlock their latent energy flexibility and earn money for doing so.
“That might be through adjusting their energy consumption by delaying energy intensive processes or by increasing generation via a back-up generator. Another option might be to adjust generator maintenance firings to take advantage of DSR requirements.
“The trial is also allowing us, as a distribution network operator, to explore how DSR’s effects on network reinforcement can provide environmental benefits. For instance, businesses that opt for our fully-managed service can help reduce the need for peaking plant, which is often quite dirty. One of our aims is to understand the levels and types of demand reduction available – and therefore the environmental benefits accessible via DSR.”
Flexible Power, which is funded by Ofgem innovation funding, goes live in November but businesses are urged to sign up as soon as possible so the team can install the necessary equipment. Every business that takes part will have a bespoke package created for them.
The increased amount of generation connected at distribution level is creating an industry-wide shift from distribution network operators to distribution system operators. The challenges posed by changed electricity flows on the network are being answered both by traditional reinforcement and by smarter ways of managing demand and response.
