New technology for WPD trucks
Western Power Distribution has invested in new safety equipment on 11 MAN Trucks within its fleet with the aim of giving their drivers a clearer view of cyclists who ride on the nearside of these vehicles.

The new audible warning device has sensors along the side of each truck which sets off a loud audible warning signal to the driver when a cyclist rides along on the inside and warns the cyclist if the truck is turning left. There is also a small screen mounted in the cab which provides a visual of the cyclist for the driver too. On the rear of the truck are new signs warning cyclists of the dangers of passing on the inside.
The Freight Transport Association has recommended this equipment to its members after a number of incidents in London; particularly involving HGV’s turning left with cyclists coming up on the nearside.
John Brooks, WPD’s Transport Manager explains: “This equipment will give our drivers an additional view of road users on the nearside of their vehicles as the wing mirrors will not pick up everything; a cyclist can be lost in the mirror’s blind spot.

“Annually in the UK, around 19,000 cyclists are killed or injured in reported road accidents. Anything we can do to contribute to reducing accidents on the road remains a number one priority for WPD.”
