Young artists awarded Royal Welsh prizes

Two sisters from a Carmarthenshire school have scooped top prizes in this year’s Royal Welsh Agricultural Society’s (RWAS) annual Children’s Art and Design Competition sponsored by us.

Talented sisters Zakia Johnson (right) and Kiki (left) both pupils at the same school in Ammanford, South Wales scooped top prizes at this year’s Royal Welsh Show. Each year the competition attracts hundreds of entries from young artists across Wales. Pupils are invited to use their skill and imagination to design a painting or drawing illustrating ‘Staying safe around Electricity’.

Zakia Bella Johnson, a pupil at Ysgol Gynradd Saron, Ammanford, not only won first prize in the eight to nine-year-old category but was also declared the overall winner. Zakia received a cash prize of £30, and £200 for her school.

Nine-year-old Zakia was joined by her little sister Kiki aged seven who also won first prize in the five to seven-year-old age category. Kiki received a cash prize of £30 and £100 for her school.

Sean Sullivan, our Network Services Manager, who presented the youngsters with their prizes, praised the excellent standard of entries: “We’ve been sponsoring this competition for over 20 years and each year the children manage to delight us with their creative ideas. The standard is always really high.”

During the show, prize-winning posters were displayed at WPD’s award-winning display stand.
