Young artists scoop prizes for school

Artistic primary school pupils from Brecon and Powys scooped top prizes in this year’s Royal Welsh Agricultural Society’s annual Children’s Art and Design Competition.

Douglas Bathgate, aged 7 of Mount Street Primary School, Brecon, has won first prize and is the overall winner receiving a cash prize of £30 plus £100 for his school and now his design will be used as the Society’s official Christmas card for 2013. It will go on sale later in the year at the Society’s Winter Fair.

Fellow pupils also from Mount Street School, Caitlin Davies, scooped up the second prize in the 9-11 year old age category and won a cash prize of £20. Meanwhile, Amy Pitt was awarded a highly commended in the same category.

Tegan Roberts, a pupil at Ysgol Gynradd Machynlleth won first prize in the 9-11 year old age category and won a cash prize of £30 for herself plus £100 for her school. Tegan, who has been entering the competition since she started primary school, has managed to win a prize each year, for the past five years.

Sponsored by WPD, the competition attracted over 800 hundred young artists from twenty six schools from across Wales. Pupils were invited to use their skill and imagination to design a painting or drawing illustrating ‘What Christmas Means to Me’.

Phil Davies, WPD’s Network Services Manager for Wales, who presented all the young artists with their prizes, said “The standard of entries had been excellent, we have been sponsoring this competition now for over 12 years and each year the youngsters manage to delight us with their creative ideas.”

During the Show, prize-winning posters were displayed at the Western Power Distribution Stand.
