Common Information Model
The Common Information Models (CIM) provide a complete and consolidated view of our network assets and their connectivity. The models bring together a huge range of datasets from different types of energy network infrastructure equipment, sensors and assets, including transformers, circuit breakers, wires and cables.
The CIMs can be used in power system tools or using freely available web based CIM tools, meaning that our network and its assets can now viewed schematically whilst being able to understand their detail and properties. This data will support customers and stakeholders to more easily use our network data to make informed decisions for their interactions with and connection to our network.
The CIM data released so far covers the South West and Wales at extra high voltage level (33kV to 132kV) and we've now developed a CIM that includes EHV and 11kV data (EHV and HV) to provide more of our network asset and connectivity data in a standard format for all four of our licence areas.
We’d like to hear your feedback on the models, how you’ve used them and importantly how they can be improved to meet your needs, now and moving forwards. Please email us at nged.data@nationalgrid.co.uk.
Notes on the models and their use
- A Winter Peak Demand and Summer Peak Generation model are provided, where the Summer Peak model assumes 30% of the Winter Peak demand.
- It is possible to run load flow analysis for a single case within a power system model, but this is only available for the intact model.
- Network data is currently represented schematically, further work is being undertaken to represent this data geographically.
- Some data within datasets is known to be incomplete – work is underway to improve and complete these datasets.
- These models have not been validated for fault level studies or any other studies beyond intact load flow.
- Models are in CGMES version 2.4.15 format.
- Whilst this data represents our current view of the network, for full design and planning activity our Long Term Development Statement (LTDS) data should be used, which is accessible here.
